I love sunflower season. Therefore, it wouldn’t be right to skip the subject. If you are reading this as seeing the title, you’re probably a sunflower lover too.
I was traveling down the highway and noticed this big brush of what looks like weeds. As I got closer, I realized there were sunflowers in the mixture of the weeds and some other type of colorful flowers. There were so many sunflowers it caught my attention for a while. I kept imagining myself photographing it and creating wall art. I thought about about the photograph each time I passed the brush in the median on the rode.
As a photographer whenever I continue to have day dreams about a subject. I have to create the image. I’ve stopped on many roads to capture a scene and this isn’t any different for me.
Now, I’m walking down the road with my camera on hand. I use to wonder what passerby’s thought of me, but ask me do I care now. It’s probably my maturity level. At some point a lady starts not to care what everyone thinks…hehe It was exciting to finally photograph this brush of flowers. I can’t photograph your typical flower shot front on. No, not me.
As I created a few images I pondered over why all of the sunflowers were pointing in the same direction. Is it because it is peak season for sunflowers in Georgia right now? What is this about they always point east? I took out my iPhone and checked the compass. Wow! They are pointing east. Some people say they face the sun. I know that isn’t true because the sun is behind them sometimes.
It’s true it is peak season and they will bloom until the early fall. They are drought tolerant, because of their extensive root system. You never see anyone out on the roads watering sunflowers. Its an easy low maintenance flower. This means if I kill a sunflower, I need to hang up the gardening tools.
I hear too many myths
about them facing east at sunrise and west at sunset. I have not found anything to support this statement . Therefore, I will leave this along. They are just beautiful , low maintenance and often times the flower heads are pointing in the same direction.
